Third-ranked Boise State survived losing an early 17-point lead to defeat tenth-ranked Virginia Tech 33-30 to keep its BCS National Championship dream alive in a seesaw opener for both teams.  Kellen Moore threw for 215 yards and three touchdowns and hit Austin Pettis with a 13-yard TD with 1:09 left for the winning score.  The Broncos came to FedEx Field with their best preseason ranking ever and raced out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter, but they needed a frantic fourth-quarter rally to extend their winning streak to 15 games.  Tyrod Taylor passed for 186 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 73 yards for the Hokies, who for the fourth straight year suffered a deflating early season loss.

The United States is through to the quarterfinals of the FIBA Basketball World Championships.  Chauncey Billups scored 19 points and Kevin Durant added 17 in Team USA's 121-66 rout of Angola.  The Americans will face Russia in Thursday's quarterfinals.  The Russians beat New Zealand 78-56.

The Norfolk Catholic volleyball team will host top ranked in both polls in Class “C-2” Lutheran High Northeast this evening at 7:30 in the first head-to-head match this season.  The Lady Knights are 4-1 on the year in Class “C-1” while the Lady Eagles are 4-1.  Last year, Lutheran High Northeast won all three matches between the two schools including a sub-district final.  The Lady Eagles moved up from second to first in the Omaha World Herald today.  The rankings were updated today.

The Omaha World Herald & Lincoln Journal Star have updated its high school football rankings.  Norfolk Catholic remains first in Class “C-1” in both newspapers.  The Knights beat Columbus Lakeview 38-3 last Thursday.
