The expanded Big Ten will place Ohio State and Michigan into different divisions. The conference announced its divisional breakdown last night, though neither division has been named. Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota and Northwestern will make up one division when the league grows to twelve teams in 2011. Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Illinois, Purdue and Indiana are in the other. Ohio State and Michigan will play each other every year on the last day of the Big Ten season, and could conceivably play each other twice in one season. Because they are in different divisions, the Buckeyes and Wolverines could play in the new Big Ten championship game.
The Big Ten's welcome gift to Nebraska looks more like a bomb. The football schedule for 2011-12, the Cornhuskers' first two seasons in the Big Ten, pits Nebraska against a lineup no sane coach would envy. The Cornhuskers open the 2011 conference schedule at Wisconsin. They come home to play Ohio State, then it's off to Minnesota and home games against Michigan State and Northwestern. against new border rival Iowa. Conspicuously absent are Indiana, Illinois and Purdue.
The Lutheran High Northeast volleyball team is ranked first in the Lincoln Journal Star in Class "C-2" and second in the Omaha World Herald as the two newspapers released their preseason rankings today. The Lady Eagles were 33-1 a season ago, losing in the first round of the State Tournament. They open today against Pender at 5:30 and Bancroft/Rosalie at 6:30 as part of the Northeast Nebraska Volleyball Classic at Pender.
