The boxing world is mourning the death of "Smokin" Joe Frazier, the former heavyweight champ who died of liver cancer yesterday at 67. Frazier beat Muhammad Ali to win the heavyweight title in 1971, though for the rest of his career mostly had to settle for second fiddle to Ali's greatness in that era.
Prosecutors say Nebraska volleyball star Lauren Cook will be charged after hitting two people on a motorcycle and then fleeing in her SUV. Lancaster County Deputy Attorney Patrick Condon declined to say what charge or charges Cook would face. Her arraignment is today. Cook was arrested Oct. 30 on suspicion of leaving the scene of an injury accident and ticketed for driving on a suspended license. The driver of the motorcycle broke his leg, and his passenger was scraped up. Lincoln Emergency Communications released audio of Cook's 911 call yesterday. Cook tells the operator she wants to make sure the motorcyclists are OK and that she doesn't want to be charged for a hit-and-run. Cook has had six speeding tickets since 2007 in Nebraska.
The top ranked in both polls in Class “C-1” 10-0 Norfolk Catholic football team hosts second ranked 9-1 Pierce tonight in a 6:30 quarterfinal matchup. The Defending Champions are coming off a second round 35-13 win at Chadron last Wednesday while the Bluejays were walloping Valentine 30-13 at home. The Knights beat Pierce earlier in the season 16-14 on October 7th in Pierce. This year, NC is outscoring their foes on average 38.9-9.7. The Bluejays are outscoring their opponents on average 45.1-13.5. The Knights lead the head-to-head matchup dating back to 1981 24-13. Norfolk Catholic has claimed the last five meetings between the two programs by an average score of 25.4-12.8.
