The Los Angeles Lakers are NBA champions for the second straight year and 16th time in franchise history after beating the Boston Celtics 83-79 in the seventh game of the NBA Finals.  Finals MVP Kobe Bryant overcame a cold-shooting night and led the Lakers with 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to win fifth NBA title as a player.

The leaderboard of the 110th U.S. Open definitely has a foreign flavor.  England's Paul Casey, Zimbabwe's Brendon de Jonge and 2003 PGA champion Shaun Micheel of the U.S. Share the first-round lead at the U.S. Open.  Top-ranked Tiger Woods finished three-over-par 74.  Woods has managed 15 pars and three bogeys.  It's the first time since the 2003 Masters that Woods has played the first round in a major without a birdie.  Second-ranked Phil Mickelson didn't make a birdie and struggled to a 4-over 75.  Neither Woods nor Mickelson made a single birdie.  It's the first time the world's top two players have ever competed in the same tournament without making one.

Northeast Community College has named Kurt Pytleski as their new athletic director.  He replaces Doug Brown.  Pytleski is an instructor at the college working with the Horticulture Golf Course Management Program.  He has also been the Director of Golf Operations at Fairplay Golf Course in Norfolk for the last ten years.  Pytleski assumed the position on June 3rd.

Northeast Community College will showcase northeast Nebraska’s top graduated seniors in the All-Star Volleyball Classic tonight at 7:00 PM at the Cox Activities Center.  The “Light” team will be made up of Norfolk Catholic’s Cali Bellar, Brooke Maguire, & Shelby Engelhaupt.  Also on the “Light” squad will be Norfolk High’s April Martens.  Norfolk’s Kate Wells will represent the “Dark” team.
