China leads all countries with nine golds and is tied with the United States with 17 overall medals. The U.S. has five golds. Japan is third with eleven overall medals. Americans showcased their medal power in the Olympic pool on Monday night. Missy Franklin earned her first gold medal by winning the women's 100-meter backstroke. The 17-year-old won the race just ten minutes after earning the eighth and final spot in the 200-meter freestyle final. Matt Grevers made it a backstroke sweep for the United States, and he did it in Olympic record time. On the other hand, world champion Ryan Lochte was shut out of the medals in the 200-meter freestyle, finishing a disappointing fourth. Today's action includes gold medal finals in the men's 200-meter butterfly featuring Michael Phelps.
Police in Tampa, Florida, say Tennessee Titans reserve receiver O.J. Murdock has died of an apparent suicide. A police spokeswoman says officers found the 25-year-old football player inside his car yesterday with what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died. Murdock did not report to training camp over the weekend because of what the team said at the time was a personal issue.
Penn State star running back Silas Redd is strongly leaning toward transferring to USC, according to ESPN. Redd visited Southern California this past weekend. Redd, who ran for 1,241 yards last season, could be a fit in a USC offense that has big plans this season. The Trojans will be highly ranked and one of the favorites to win the Pac-12 Conference. Penn State backup safety Tim Buckley is the first Nittany Lion to transfer in the wake of the NCAA sanctions against the university. North Carolina State released a statement yesterday announcing Buckley, a North Carolina native, would join the Wolfpack for the team's first practice today. The former walk-on redshirted last season at Penn State, so he'll have four years of eligibility left. The NCAA allowed Penn State players to seek immediate transfers after the sanctions against the school for the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
