The Philadelphia Phillies were big winners on and off the field.  Wilson Valdez's RBI single with one out in the eleventh inning lifted the Phillies to their eighth straight win, 3-2 over the Arizona Diamondbacks.  Coupled with Atlanta's loss, that moves the Phils within 2 ½ games of the National League East-leading Braves.  Before the game, the Phillies improved their chances at winning a fourth straight NL East title by acquiring three-time All-Star Roy Oswalt from Houston for J.A. Happ and two prospects.  The Phils also got $11 million in the deal.  Oswalt is scheduled to start for the two-time NL champions at Washington on tonight.

Tim Tebow agreed to a contract with the Denver Broncos yesterday.  The two-time national champion quarterback from Florida and 25th pick in the NFL draft missed the first three workouts for rookies and selected veterans while his agent, Jimmy Sexton, and general manager Brian Xanders hammered out a deal.  It's believed to be worth about $11 million over five years with more than $8 million of that guaranteed.  ESPN reported that Tebow could earn as much as $33 million over the course of the contract.

Charlotte University sophomore Andy Sajevic of Fremont claimed the 102nd Nebraska Amateur Championship at the Happy Hollow Club in Omaha yesterday.  Sajevic, paired with third round leader, Ryan Nietfeldt of Omaha, shot a 2-under par 69 to overcame a 4-shot deficit and top Nietfeldt by two shots.  Sajevic finished with a 282.  Nietfeldt finished at even-par for the tournament following a 75.  The title is Sajevic's first men's state championship.  His father, John won the 1989 championship and finished tied for 4th with Michael Coatman of Lincoln this year.  Coatman, the second round leader, shared the lead with Nietfeldt halfway through yesterday's round.  A back-nine 40 left him out of contention.  John Spellerberg, also of Fremont and Bryce Brown of Lincoln shared low junior amateur honors.  Both were recognized with a silver medal.  Concerning area golfers, Norfolk’s Lance Lawson totaled a 301 after yesterday’s 78.  Beemer’s Richard Schneider carded an 80 yesterday to finish with a 303 and Columbus’ Mike Krumland finished up with a 304 after yesterday’s 72.
