Phil Jackson has decided to coach the Los Angeles Lakers for one more year as they try to win their third straight NBA championship. Jackson is the NBA's all-time leader among coaches with eleven titles and 225 playoff victories. He's won five crowns with the Lakers after capturing six with the Chicago Bulls.
LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh were among the NBA free agents courted by a host of suitors yesterday. James spoke with officials from the New York Knicks and New Jersey Nets, Wade spent time with representatives from the Nets and Chicago Bulls, and Bosh was busy talking with the Miami Heat and Houston Rockets.
Outfielder Alex Gordon and first baseman Kila Ka'aihue will represent the Omaha Royals on the Pacific Coast League's All-Star team, which will take on the International League in the 23rd annual Triple-A All-Star Game, to be held at Lehigh Valley's Coca-Cola Park on Wednesday, July 14. Gordon and Ka'aihue are among the PCL's leaders in several offensive categories. Gordon is batting .333 with eleven home runs and 36 RBI in 52 games with Omaha, while making the conversion from third base to the outfield. Ka'aihue is hitting .307 with 14 homers and 50 RBI in 63 contests.
Creighton softball head coach Brent Vigness has resigned his post to take the same position at Wisconsin. He recently concluded his 17th season at Creighton, where he logged a 553-375-2 record. Creighton Athletics director Bruce Rasmussen has stated a nationwide search is already underway to find Vigness’ successor. Vigness was just the second head coach in the 34-year history of Bluejay softball, with Creighton Hall of Famer Mary Higgins leading the squad for the first 17 years. The three-time Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year ends his highly successful 17-year run in Omaha just eleven wins shy of Higgins’ school-record 564. Under the guidance of Vigness, the Bluejays won six MVC regular-season championships, six Valley tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament seven times.
