All-Stars LeBron James, Amare Stoudemire, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Dirk Nowitzki were among the available players when the NBA free-agent market opened this morning. Stoudemire opted out of his contract yesterday after he failed to work out an extension with the Phoenix Suns. Joe Johnson's agent says the four-time All-Star is meeting today with the Atlanta Hawks, who are expected to do their best to keep Johnson by offering their top scorer a maximum contract.
The Nebraska football team has added another recruit. Kicker Niklas Sade of Raleigh, N.C., said yesterday that he has given the Huskers a verbal pledge to become part of its 2011 scholarship class according to the Lincoln Journal Star. The 6’3, 190 pounder kicked a 57 yard field goal during the Big Red Kicking Academy last month. Rated as the No. 2 kicker nationally by the prestigious Chris Sailer Kicking Academy, Sade becomes the 13th player known to have committed to Nebraska’s class of 2011. The Huskers’ top two place-kickers on their current roster Alex Henery and Adi Kunalic both are seniors. Kunalic is the last high school kicker to earn a scholarship offer from Nebraska, doing so in 2007. Sade had one other scholarship offer, from North Carolina State. Last season, he reportedly averaged 41 yards as a punter, booted 21 touchbacks and made 37-37 PATs and 6-8 field goals with a long of 45 yards.
The field was trimmed to eight golfers at the 43rd Nebraska Match Play Championship yesterday. Last year's finalists remain but the trio that earned medalist honors in qualifying are gone. Defending champion, John Hurley of O'Neill topped John Sutko of Omaha 5 & 3 and Jayson Brueggemann of Lincoln 1 up. Last season's runner-up, Andy Sajevic of Fremont defeated Hap Pocras of Omaha 5 & 3 and Andrew Storm of Omaha 5 & 4. Hurley meets Wes Bernt of Omaha in today's quarterfinal with Sajevic paired against David Overman of Omaha. In the Round of 32, Beemer’s Richard Schneider lost to Lincoln’s Austin Zimmerman 20 holes and Columbus’ Greg Pohlmann was beaten by Overman 4 and 3. Play resumes today.
