Ndamukong Suh has missed his third straight day of practice with the Detroit Lions. Coach Jim Schwartz says it's disappointing that the former Nebraska Cornhusker standout has missed some opportunities in training camp that are gone forever. Suh was the second pick overall in the NFL draft. The Lions have had only one player, Calvin Johnson, miss more than a couple days since Bryan Westbrook was a long-term holdout in 1997. Westbrook's agents were Roosevelt Barnes and Eugene Parker, both of whom are representing Suh. "Both sides are working hard to get this resolved,"
Commissioner Jim Delany expects the Big Ten to hold a championship game next season, when Nebraska joins and brings the league to 12 members. He also said teams will likely play nine conference games instead of eight in the future to help preserve rivalries. Athletic director Tom Osborne says Nebraska wasn't seeking riches or ducking competition when it decided to bolt the Big XII for the Big Ten. He says the move was about stability. The Big Ten had it and the Big XII did not, so the Cornhuskers are switching conferences. They'll start play in the Big Ten next year, one of college football's traditional powers joining a tradition-rich conference that was trying to maintain solid footing in a shaky landscape. Osborne said yesterday that drew Nebraska, not the promise of more money or anger toward the Big XII. He says there was "a lot of uncertainty in the Big XII" when the Big Ten invited Nebraska.
Nebraska cornerback Prince Amukamara is among 35 players named to the 2010 Jim Thorpe Award preseason watch list. The award goes annually to the best defensive back in college football. The Jim Thorpe Association says the list was determined by analysis of the preseason All-America teams listed in at least six college football magazines. Three finalists will be named on Nov. 22 and the winner on Dec. 9. Amukamara, a senior, earned 2nd team AP All-Big XII honors last year. In June, Amukamara and teammate Jared Crick were among 74 players named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list. The Nagurski goes to the nation's top defensive player. Last year it was won by Husker defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.
