Residents Urged to Prepare for Flooding
NORFOLK - Residents on the south edge of Norfolk, especially those who live south of Monroe Avenue, are being urged to prepare for high water and possible evacuation. Red Cross officials say that furniture and valuable items should be moved to the highest level of the home, or removed. Outdoor items, like patio furniture, should be moved indoors. Residents should be prepared to shut off the main electrical and gas sources if ordered to do so by authorities. The Northeast Nebraska Red Cross Chapter is on standby to open a shelter in Norfolk if evacuations are ordered. Shalle Wolff, Red Cross Chapter Executive, says residents in low-lying areas should have a small overnight bag packed with personal items in case they have to be in shelter overnight or for several days. Wolff also reminds pet owners that the Red Cross shelters are not equipped to take pets or animals except for service dogs. Pet owners should make arrangements with local veterinary clinics and pet boarding businesses for kenneling. Cost of boarding is the responsibility of the pet owner.
