News Briefs:
Police and sheriff's departments across Nebraska have been wary of applying for federal stimulus dollars. Just seven local agencies have applied for the money, which is available until 2013. The Nebraska Crime Commission's director says some agencies may not want to deal with the reporting requirements tied to accepting the money and have been weaning themselves from federal dollars.

Many in the movement had put their hopes in political newcomer Matt Sakalosky, who now says he'll support incumbent GOP Rep. Lee Terry in the general election. The South Sioux City Education Center has enjoyed phenomenal growth in just five years, with 295 students currently taking classes in the temporary facility. In January, the joint Wayne State-Northeast Community College South Sioux City College Center will open, and Pam Miller, currently the director of the Education Center, has been named dean.

The Campaign for Free Enterprise is sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The U.S. Chamber's Brian Gunderson said in Norfolk Thursday, the campaign shows the crucial role free enterprise plays in creating jobs in helping the country return to the prosperity its accustomed to. He says Norfolk is a model for what other areas of the country should be doing in order to move ahead with over 25 business expansion projects over the past year-and-a-half.
After the rain comes -- mosquito larvae! Burt County Extension Educator John Wilson reminds all homeowners to drain standing water sources to control mosquito populations. Wilson says even plugged up roof eaves can be a breeding place for mosquitoes.
