Dusty Baker is taking his third different team to baseball's post season as his Cincinnati Reds are in the playoffs for the first time in 15 years. Jay Bruce's dramatic ninth-inning home run gave the Reds a 3-2 win over Houston that secured the NL Central title for the Reds.
 
The Tampa Bay Rays clinched their second playoff berth in three years by blanking Baltimore 5-0 behind 19-game winner David Price. The Rays remain a half-game ahead of the New York Yankees, who clinched their 15th post season berth in the last 16 years and CC Sabathia got his 21st win of the season in their 6-1 win over Toronto.
 
San Francisco beat Arizona 4-2 and San Diego lost 5-2 to the Chicago Cubs, so the Giants have a two-game lead over the Padres in the NL West. The Padres also fell a game and a-half back of Atlanta in the NL wild card chase.
 
Boone Central won the Mid-State Conference Girls Golf Championship Tuesday at the Wayne Country Club. The Lady Cardinals shot a team score 362. Wayne was a distant second with a 403 -- followed by Battle Creek with 419 and Norfolk Catholic with 431. Brook Bolin of Boone Central took medalist honors with a 79. Paige Marsden of Norfolk Catholic was eighth with a 102. NC's Molly Langel and Lexi McCoy both shot 106 -- good for tenth place.
 
The Norfolk High Boys tennis team swept Columbus in a dual Tuesday afternoon in Norfolk . The Panthers won the varsity match eight-to-one, the JV match nine-to-nothing and the Reserve match 5-0. Columbus' number one singles player, Ryan Fehr, defeated Kaleb Kreikemeier 9-8 (7-4). Norfolk's other five singles players won their matches. In doubles, Norfolk's Eric Busskohl and Cody Schantz defeated Grant Jirka and August Wagner 8-love.

News Briefs:
 Census data from last year suggest there are more foreign-born people living in Nebraska. The American Community Survey indicates in 2009, there were nearly 106,200 foreign-born people in the state, compared with nearly 97,700 in 2008. That was a jump of around 8,500 in one year, compared with a decline of about 1,000 a year for the three years previous. The survey also says the Nebraska poverty rate rose to 12.3 percent last year, compared with 10.8 percent in 2008.
 
The Nebraska Public Power District will buy energy from a new wind farm in central Nebraska as part of a 20-year contract. The deal to get power from the 80-megawatt wind farm near Broken Bow brings NPPD closer to its goal of eventually having 10 percent of its power generated from renewable sources.
 
Madison County Commissioners have approved the renewal of an interlocal agreement with the state of Nebraska for the continuation of adult and juvenile drug courts here. The specialized court diverts non-violent, substance abusing offenders from prison and jail into treatment, help break the cycle of criminal behavior, alcohol and drug use, and incarceration. 7th Judicial District Chief Probation Officer Kathryn Liebers says two more drug court participants will go through a graduation ceremony Friday morning at the Madison County Courthouse.
 
Gov. Dave Heineman and several Nebraska education leaders have unveiled a campaign to encourage high school students to visit Nebraska college and university campuses. Heineman unveiled the "Go Visit College" campaign today, saying it's an effort to make Nebraska a top ten college-attending state.
 
A new member is being sought for the Madison County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Michael O'Connor has stepped down because of business travel conflicts. The five-member board oversees the work of the bureau and makes decisions on tourism grants.
 
Registrations are being taken now for the November 19th AgCeptional Women's Conference in Norfolk. Speakers will include Pat McGill and Juli Burney. Participants will also be offered 27 separate breakout sessions. For more information, check the website Northeast.edu.
 
The Norfolk Area United Way is nearly halfway to its $522,500 goal. At Tuesday's report meeting, volunteers reported a total of $255,373 collected so far. Marsha Cleveland was honored with the Marlene Ahrenholtz Spirit of Volunteerism Award.
