Sports:
 Boise State gained seven first-place votes and closed in on top ranked Alabama and second ranked Ohio State as the top three teams in the first regular season Associated Press Football Poll held their spots from the preseason.  Boise State received eight first-place votes from the media panel after a thrilling 33-30 victory against then-tenth ranked Virginia Tech on Monday night.  The Broncos are 13 points behind the Buckeyes, who received four first-place votes.  Alabama got 47 first-place votes, down seven from the preseason, and is 72 points clear of Ohio State.  TCU moves up two spots to fourth and Texas remains fifth with one first-place vote while Nebraska is sixth.
 
The top ranked in both polls in Class “C2” Lutheran High Northeast volleyball team improved to 5-1 on the season after winning at Norfolk Catholic last night in four sets.  They beat the Lady Knights 25-18, 25-23, 20-25, 25-15.  Kelsey Dinkel led Lutheran High Northeast with eleven kills while Erin Anderson led N.C. with ten kills.  Norfolk Catholic drops to 4-2 on the year.
 
The Norfolk High girls golf team won a triangular at Columbus yesterday.  The Lady Panthers shot a 184 while Fremont carded a 186 and Columbus shot a 205.  Norfolk’s Sydney Roenfeldt & Kenzie Essley both a shot a 45 to lead the way.  In other golf news, Hartington Cedar Catholic won their own triangular yesterday with a 219.  Norfolk Catholic was second with a 228 and Pierce was third with a 270.  The Lady Knights’ Paige Marsden was the medalist with a 47.

News Briefs:
 The Norfolk City Council has increased the fee for a snow emergency violation from 25 dollars to 50 dollars. City Attorney Clint Schukie says the new fee is in line with what other cities charge, will hopefully allow for better compliance and improve snow removal.
 
A Norfolk businessman has joined the City Council. Thad Murren was sworn in Tuesday night as the new Ward Four councilman. He succeeds Erik Wilson, who resigned this summer after moving to another part of the city.
 
A car-motorcycle collision at the Broadmoor Drive entrance at Woodland Park sent a Norfolk man to the hospital with a serious leg injury. Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger says Mike Krueger, 44, was thrown from his motorcycle after he was struck by a car that pulled out in front of him around 5:00 Tuesday afternoon. Unger says the driver of the car, Drew Kubo, 18, and a three-year-old passenger, declined treatment at the scene. Highway 35 near Woodland Park was closed for about a half hour after the collision.
 
The city of Fremont's ban on renting to and hiring illegal immigrants is raising concerns among members of a committee that reports to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. A member of the committee says even though the voter-approved ordinance has been put on hold, it could infringe on civil rights.
 
Anne Boyle says she didn't twice about joining the Democratic gubernatorial ticket. The longtime member of the state Public Service Commission is Scottsbluff attorney Mike Meister's running mate in the November election. While in Norfolk Tuesday, Boyle told WJAG NEWS Meister is a capable, intelligent and confident man and would do a fine job serving as governor. Boyle was actually among those responsible for where she is today after Democrat Mark Lakers dropped out of the race over campaign finance irregularities. She called for him to drop his campaign.
 
Governor Dave Heineman will spend a good part of his day today in Norfolk. He'll deliver remarks late this morning to the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce's Women's Business meeting at J's Steakhouse. At 1:30, he'll attend groundbreaking ceremonies right across the street at Seventh Street and Norfolk Avenue for the new Chamber building and Visitor's Center. Later this afternoon, Heineman will tour the Green Fiber plant, Wis-Pak and Heritage of Bel-Air skilled nursing facility. Lt. Governor Rick Sheehy will also be in the community today.
 
Fair officials say attendance at the Nebraska State Fair beat expectations during its inaugural run in Grand Island. They report 309,400 people came through the gates during the fair's eleven-day run. That also beat attendance at the fair when it was held in Lincoln two years ago.
