Third-ranked Boise State survived losing an early 17-point lead to defeat tenth-ranked Virginia Tech 33-30 to keep its BCS National Championship dream alive in a seesaw opener for both teams.  Kellen Moore threw for 215 yards and three touchdowns and hit Austin Pettis with a 13-yard TD with 1:09 left for the winning score.  The Broncos came to FedEx Field with their best preseason ranking ever and raced out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter, but they needed a frantic fourth-quarter rally to extend their winning streak to 15 games.  Tyrod Taylor passed for 186 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 73 yards for the Hokies, who for the fourth straight year suffered a deflating early season loss.

Two Nebraska death row inmates say prison officials are not complying with a 1986 consent degree that outlines the time they get to spend in the law library, exercise yard and day room. Eric Vela and Jorge Galindo say they were denied access to those areas of the prison while segregated from other death row inmates for disciplinary reasons. The two were convicted in the murders of five people at Norfolk's U.S. bank in 2002.

Separate trials are planned next year for three Nebraska meatpackers over how they pay their workers. Nebraska Beef in Omaha, Greater Omaha Packing and the Tyson Foods plant in Dakota City are all facing lawsuits accusing them of violating state and federal wage and labor laws for years.

The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning for the northwest corner of the Nebraska Panhandle and for southeast Wyoming. The overnight low could hit the mid- to upper 20s in some low spots - temperatures that could damage some plants. The warning includes the cities of Alliance, Chadron and Harrison.
