The expanded Big Ten will place Ohio State and Michigan into different divisions. The conference announced its divisional breakdown last night, though neither division has been named. Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota and Northwestern will make up one division when the league grows to twelve teams in 2011. Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Illinois, Purdue and Indiana are in the other.
The Big Ten's welcome gift to Nebraska looks more like a bomb. The football schedule for 2011-12, the Cornhuskers' first two seasons in the Big Ten, pits Nebraska against a lineup no sane coach would envy. The Cornhuskers open the 2011 conference schedule at Wisconsin. They come home to play Ohio State, then it's off to Minnesota and home games against Michigan State and Northwestern. Here comes the big finish: at Penn State, at Michigan and home against new border rival Iowa. Conspicuously absent are Indiana, Illinois and Purdue.

They open today against Pender at 5:30 and Bancroft/Rosalie at 6:30 as part of the Northeast Nebraska Volleyball Classic at Pender.

News Briefs:
State education board member Bob Evnen is expected to introduce another resolution today supporting repeal of federal health care reform. The board discussed a resolution yesterday from Evnen, but did not vote. The resolution followed Governor Dave Heineman's letter to education groups urging them to support the repeal.
Gov. Dave Heineman tells lawmakers the state insurance department has applied for a federal grant to help set up the so-called insurance exchange. The exchange would be used by people whose incomes are too high to qualify for Medicaid, which is being expanded under the federal health care law.
Madison County government will no longer pay full insurance coverage on family members of any newly hired employees. County Board of Commissioners Chairman Jerry McCallum says full coverage will be on the new hire only. Commissioners say the policy change is being prompted by a concern over health care costs. It may not come into play in the near future since the county currently has a hiring freeze in effect.
The budget to support the operations of the Madison County Convention and Visitors Bureau reflects a decrease in one particular category. Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce President Dennis Houston told Madison County Commissioners this week, reducing travel expenses by 40% will allow them to focus more on grant funding.
The director of the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety says law enforcement in the state continues its efforts to deter drunk driving. He says 50 agencies have been conducting about 9,000 hours of "You Drink, You Drive, You Lose" enforcement.
The Nebraska Department of Roads reports the new traffic signal at the intersection of Highway 81 and Monroe Avenue in south Norfolk has been activated. Highway Project Manager Matthew Samuelson says motorists should use caution when driving through this intersection and obey the traffic signal. It was activated at noon Wednesday.
A homeless man is in trouble with authorities in Beaverton, Ore., after police say he called 911 from a hot tub outside someone's house and requested towels, hot chocolate with marshmallows and a hug. The man was arrested for trespassing.
