One Missing After Norfolk Bridge Collapse

NORFOLK - Norfolk City officials have confirmed that one person is missing in the Elkhorn River after a railroad bridge collapsed southwest of town. Chad Korth of Nebraska Central Railroad says three workers were on the railroad bridge at Sara's Lake when it collapsed shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday. Two have been accounted for, but the third is still missing. No names are being released at this time. Korth says one of the men rescued was "shaken up" but not seriously injured. He has no information about the condition of the second man. Korth says the bridge was built in 1918, and the workers were planning to put rail cars full of rock on the bridge to help hold it in place. Korth says the loss of the bridge will be "devastating" to rail service in Norfolk. He says North Central serves several Norfolk businesses, including Nucor, Norfolk Iron and Metal, Louis Dreyfuss, Vulcraft, Covidien and Veyance Technologies. He says it requires four trucks to haul the same material as one rail car.
