Norfolk Police Kill Charging Dog
NORFOLK - A Norfolk Police officer shot and killed a dog that had bitten a woman earlier this week. Police Captain Leon Chapman says the incident occurred around 9:45 Tuesday night near First Street and Pasewalk Avenue. The woman was walking with her sister on First Street when the pit bull terrier ran up behind them and bit the woman on the upper leg. Chapman says she was holding the dog by the collar while waiting for an officer to arrive on scene. The woman released the dog, but it came back after her and the officer -- barking and bearing its teeth as it charged toward them. That's when the officer drew his firearm and shot and killed the dog. Chapman says the dog owner came to the scene and was issued a citation for dog and large and "harboring a cross dog." He says the dog had its current rabies vaccination and city license.
