Norfolk Officials View Damaged Rail Bridge

NORFOLK - Approximately 25 people, representing Norfolk area industry, government and state and federal officials, stood on the banks of the Elkhorn River Thursday, just a few hundred feet away from the Nebraska Central Railroad bridge that now sits in the river. The bridge's pilings gave way in last week's flooding. Nucor Steel, Norfolk Iron and Metal and Louis Dreyfus ethanol are among the local companies who rely on the bridge to ship out their products. Nucor General Manager and Vice President Dirk Petersen says half the product they ship out goes by rail. He says they've had to find another 150 trucks a day just to ship Nucor material while nearby Norfolk Iron and Metal and the Louis Dreyfuss ethanol plant had to find another 150-to-200 trucks as well.
