Norfolk House Fire

NORFOLK - A passerby is credited with alerting Norfolk authorities to a house fire late Wednesday night. Fire Division Shift Commander John Reding says the motorist noticed flames coming from the front of the house at 308 South 8th Street around 11:30 p.m. Firefighters were able gain control of the blaze within minutes after their arrival and contained it to the immediate front room. The house was unoccupied and was under renovation by its owners prior to the fire. Reding says an investigation determined the accidental fire was caused by a spontaneous combustion from wood finishing stain and varnish materials disposed within close proximity of each other -- causing the chemical reaction. Damage is estimated at $5,000 dollars.
