Norfolk Family Welfare Group Closure Eminent

NORFOLK - (AP) - A number of groups that help families navigate Nebraska's child welfare system may shut their doors - some by the end of the month - because their funding from a state contractor has been cut. The news came as advocates of a dozen such groups testified before a legislative committee on Wednesday. Bob Gereaux is director of Norfolk-based Parent to Parent Network that serves northeast Nebraska. He says his group's contract was not renewed by Boys and Girls Home Inc. of Sioux City -- one of three contractors the state has to oversee essential services for more than 6,000 state wards. He says if funding isn't renewed, Parent to Parent will be forced to shut down on Sept. 30.
