New Plan For Norfolk Recreation Upgrades

NORFOLK - City of Norfolk officials have come up with a way to finance Memorial Field and Ta-Ha-Zouka Park upgrades with no property tax increase. The tax increase was the chief complaint when the 23 million dollar plan was introduced in January. City Finance Officer Randy Gates says the plan now calls for 16 million in upgrades, but would substitute a property tax increase with a total 6-percent occupation tax on lodging and prepared food and beverages. Those who spoke at a town hall meeting Tuesday night liked the idea. The City's plan calls for an expanded swimming pool at Memorial Park, upgrade its baseball and football fields, construct a combined locker room facility for all three entities and construct two new ball fields on the east side of Ta-Ha-Zouka. Officials urged citizens to learn more about the plan and contact their city councilmen to express their views.
