Nebraska Central Railroad Bridge Reopens

NORFOLK - Less than two months after it went out of commission, the railroad bridge south of Norfolk is now carrying traffic once again. Approximately 60 people were on hand Thursday morning to witness two Nebraska Central Railroad locomotives and approximately 60 rail cars cross the raised steel structure. Crews worked 20-hours days rebuilding its piers and raising the bridge after it collapsed into the swollen Elkhorn River following devastating flooding. Meanwhile, it was an emotional day for the Jeff Scholl family. The Nebraska Central employee died when the bridge fell while two other workers were rescued. Several members of his family were on the #4603 -- the locomotive that now bears his name -- as it crossed the bridge Thursday.
