Nebraska Central Looking To Replace Bridge
NORFOLK - The head of the parent company of Nebraska Central Railroad is confident a rail bridge that collapsed last week over the Elkhorn River near Norfolk can be replaced. Rio Grande-Pacific Corporation Chairman and CEO Richard Bertel says he doesn't believe the collapse of the bridge had anything to do with structural integrity, but from the high floodwaters and debris in the river. He says railroad engineers don't believe the bridge's spans have been damaged, but they won't know for sure until they get in the river. And that won't happen until the company gets a permit from the Corps of Engineers. Bertel says they will be working, in the meantime, to get the other pieces of restoring the bridge in place so they can be ready once they get the permit.
