Governor Orders Employee Furloughs

LINCOLN (AP) - Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman is ordering most state employees to take two furlough days before the end of 2010 to save $3.5 million. Heineman announced the furloughs Friday. More than 11,000 Nebraska state workers, whose jobs are covered by a union contract, will be forced to take the two unpaid days. Previously, the union rejected Heineman's request to accept a pay freeze. Heineman did freeze the pay of state workers who aren't covered by a union contract, and those workers will not be forced to take furloughs.
