Flood Disaster Declaration Expected Soon

LINCOLN (AP) - A federal disaster declaration for a large swath of Nebraska damaged in June primarily by heavy flooding is expected soon. Gov. Dave Heineman said today he expected a disaster declaration from the White House within a week or ten days. That would trigger the release of federal aid to help repair damage. Two weeks ago, Heineman requested federal aid to help communities recover from storms and flooding that caused more than $16 million in damage to public infrastructure alone. Actual costs will exceed that estimate, because assessment teams stop tallying damage in individual counties once the threshold to qualify for aid has been met.
