Elkhorn River Crests At Norfolk

NORFOLK - The Elkhorn River has crested in Norfolk -- and is beginning to recede slowly. A spokesman in the City's Emergency Operations Center says the river crested at 16.85 feet at 9:00 Tuesday night. By 4:00 this morning, the water had begun to recede on streets in southeast Norfolk. The spokesman says water from the Elkhorn continues to run over Highway 81 and the road remains closed to traffic. First Street south of Washington Avenue also remains closed to traffic this morning. The EOC reports there was a mandatory evacuation of the area south of Washington Avenue Tuesday night and it recommended an evacuation of the area south of Omaha Avenue.
