Columbus Voters Extend Sales Tax

COLUMBUS (AP) - More than 73 percent of Columbus voters approved an extension of the local 1 percent sales tax. Authorization to collect the local tax was to expire April 1, 2011. The city wanted to extend it six years beyond, to April 1, 2017. Officials say the extension approved by voters in Tuesday's election is expected to raise about $3.3 million a year for streets, drainage and capital improvements. The city also collects a half-percent sales tax to pay off bonds issued for a water park and aquatic center.
