Bikes, Skateboards Not Allowed on Downtown Sidewalks

NORFOLK - Norfolk citizens are reminded that it is against city ordinance to ride bicycles and skateboards on the sidewalks in the downtown area. Police Captain Leon Chapman says the Police Division has received several complaints lately about bicycles and skateboards on sidewalks along Norfolk Avenue between 1st and 8th Streets. He says an ordinance adopted by the City Council in 2002 bans most wheeled vehicles and recreational items like roller skates on the downtown sidewalks to protect those who are walking or entering and exiting stores and offices. Norfolk Police will be monitoring the area, looking for these and other violations. Chapman says scooters, power chairs or electric wheelchairs used by those with limited mobility are exempt from the ban.
